You may think Niles Haunted House is scary, but it is nothing compared to McKamey Manor. McKamey Manor is said to be the scariest haunted house in the world, located in San Diego, California. It is not your ordinary haunted house with people dressed up in costumes, ready to yell “BOO” when you walk around the corner. Instead, you are drenched in fake blood, submerged in water, forced to eat unknown substances, gagged, binded, and sometimes even drugged to induce hallucinations. “Why do Americans even find this entertaining?” said senior Madelyn Reus.

McKamey Manor is one of the few haunted houses that is open year round. It was created by a man named Russ McKamey, and his best friend and business partner, Carol Shultz. You must sign a 40 page liability waiver agreeing to force-feeding, ice-water dunking, head shaving, bondage, etc. before entering. It is completely free; you are only asked to make a donation of dog food to the Greyhound Rescue Organization. You must be at least 21 years of age and have a doctors note saying you are physically and mentally capable of participating. You are aslo required to have a background check and drug test. “I would definitely do it as long as I’m not going to be killed. It sounds awesome,” said senior Hunter Schnetzler.

Only one to two people go in at a  time, and it can last anywhere from four to eight hours. The themes constantly change, so it is different for every person. No one has succeeded in lasting the whole tour. There is no safe word, as you are only allowed to leave being mentally or physically unable to continue. You are able to watch people’s experiences on YouTube. You may be wondering how this is legal. This is because by sigining the waiver, you are agreeing to everything that could happen to you. “I think this is dumb, and I wouldn’t ever do it,” said senior Claudia Thompson.

McKamey assures people that no one actually gets seriously hurt. His only goal is to terrify participants.
